Michael Sailstorfer’s salt sculpture, titled I can hear you, is composed entirely of salt - when exposed to the elements, the salt undergoes a transformational process and disintegrates. The erosion process alludes to the very transience of nature.
In Sailstorfer’s series of salt sculptures, the works are placed within their original environment and disintegrate due to the weather - the waves, and the wind - over the course of a couple of weeks. The erosion process symbolizes the changeability of nature and draws attention to the limits of its resources. In taking possession of its own resource, the salt reaches a natural resolution, and returns to its original state.
