Carbon 12 is proud to introduce the works of Amba Sayal-Bennett (b. 1991, UK) to the Middle East as well as present new works from the gallery’s artists Bernhard Buhmann(b. 1979, Austria), Gil Heitor Cortesão (b. 1967, Portugal) and Monika Grabuschnigg(b. 1987, Austria) at booth B1 during Art Dubai 2017. Cultural and human identity, questioned through Grabuschnigg’s sculptures or Buhmann’s abstract paintings converses with the highly architectural, form following function or culture versus nature paintings by Gil Heitor Cortesão and sculpture by Amba Sayal-Bennet.
Following the success of his recent solo-show at Carbon 12, Modern Times, Buhmann returns to Dubai with two new abstract paintings that continue his discussion of the fragmentation of our personal identities and surrender to a changing societal landscape.
Buhmann’s abstractions run parallel to Grabuschnigg’s exploration of cultural voyeurism that is featured in her ongoing sculptural series, Relics. Paint oozes and drips on forms inspired from imagery seen on Afghan war rugs birthed in the 1980s.
In continuation of the deconstruction of modernist utopia, Cortesão presents two new works. Through his eminent “reverse” plexiglas paintings he masterfully captures the atmosphere and geometry of the 60’s.
Sayal-Bennett on the other hand, approaches form through illustrative drawings using ProMarker pens. A sculptural work is presented as well, as drawings are translated to the third dimension, creating a visual syntax of her own.
